Heating Your Home This Winter, What Not to Do

As the winter fast approaches us the central heating will be going back on in numerous households throughout the UK. But lets have a look at some of the more half-baked ways that people try to heat up their homes every wintertime.

Tumble Dryer

Why run up two sets of bills? Well thats at least what these lot believe. Instead of switching on their central heating they leave their tumble dryers running all day and then when they have reached a good level they open their doors and out flows a blast of heat.

Oven Hob

Probably one of the more risky ways especially if their are young kids in the household. But what I have seen a lot of people do is open up their oven hobs and allow the heat to flow out of there. Again a very weird technique that will probably end up costing them more money.

Boiler Water and Dehumidifier

When I first witnessed this type of technique I was literally spellbound and just how ridiculous people could be. These people used to leave the shower running and the kettle boiling to heat up a room, at the same time a Dehumidifier was running in the background which was pulling the moist out of the air. mad, totally mad.

Mass Candles

Oh, the former wax light trick is saved until last. Did you know that burning even 100 candles in a single room will not provide the essential heat during the wintertime months, all the same people still carry on with this technique.

Now you may be thinking to yourself, why to people do all of this stupid stuff. Its merely because they have in some manner convinced themselves that they will be saving themselves money, when all they are going to be doing is spending even more money.

Some Untrue Facts About Heating Oil

October 21st, 2009

As the wintertime fast approaches us all people start to worry about their heating oil and how they are going to get through the wintertime months. This being said, most of this is simply because there is a lot of myths flying around about heating oil as a whole. So let us take a look at some of these myths.

Replace an Oil Tanker with Handles

For a vast amount of time it has been said that if you own an oil tanker with handles then the oil tanker is probably around 20 years old. This is simply not the case, the only way to actually and truthfully tell the age of a tanker is by the serial number.

Oil Tanks Give off a Bad Smell

This is just not the case at all, if the unit is installed correctly then these devices will not emit any odor at all. If you do have a foul aroma coming out of it then perhaps it is time to call in a specialist to have a look at it entirely.

Government States Change the Oil Tanks after 12 Years

A lot of people commence worrying because they feel that they need to splash out and change their oil tank as soon as it hits 12 years old, otherwise they may face a fine. This is just not the case, I mean if your oil tank is working perfectly then you really do not need to change it, only when it starts giving you problems is it time for a change.

To sum up, the only expenses you should really have on a yearly basis is to keep the boiler topped up with pure heating oil. Boilers in my experience do not tend to cause problems year in year out.
